Father / Son

Father's Day wasn't something that was in my lexicon for the longest time when I was young. These days it carries a little more weight, though it's not official celebrated.

There are two songs that remind me of dads in general. 1 in English, 1 in Chinese.

Cat Stevens - Father and Son

This song is in the perspective of a father giving his son some advice. 

I actually heard it first in Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2, at the end. 

Guardians Vol. 2 deals with family and what it means to be family. Lindsay Ellis has a great video essay here.

I couldn't really focus at the song at the end with my initial viewing, but the scene with the song was always very moving. As with the original soundtrack, I bought it and started listening to it.

Then again, this song never really got to me until more recently, after I talked more with my dad.

I think it's always going to be a complex relationship with fathers, be it the ones that are present, or the ones that aren't there.

这首歌是李宗盛2018年写的，我当然一直是李宗盛的粉丝。

这首歌并不像上面的一首吧，说的是李宗盛自己对他爸的眷恋，一点惋惜。说的他的故事，歌曲也不跟随普通的旋律定义。

"Peter losing Wendy" refers to the story of Peter Pan.

I took some liberties at "Leavin' like a father, running like water" and pegged it to be of tears running, I've seen some versions where it refers to the father running away faster with the water.

This is... Ashe

I have never heard of Ashe until this song came on as part of YouTube's recommendation.

The lyrics are so personal that I was wondering if it was personal experience.

Turns out it was.

I'm not going to repeat what the video at the end is going to tell you, but this talks a lot about her journey and how she came about to write this song about her ex-husband.

This song is produced by FINNEAS, as in, Billie Eilish's brother.

Side note: I've been identifying music producers/song writers that I vibe with, him and Ryan Tedder seem to be my jam.

Released on Valentine's Day 2019, it got mainstream only when the 2nd film in the "To All the Boys" trilogy featured it... one year later. I only watched the clip at which it was featured, I laughed, I think it's too young for the situation that this track is talking about.

A duet version with One Direction-er Niall Horan was released in June 2020, the 2nd verse is changed from the personal story about painting houses to something more contemporary.

I moved this song into the playlist I made for acceptance.

I like to think that with her new duet with FINNEAS  "Till Forever Falls Apart", she's moved on to a more optimistic portion of her life.

Usually songs that have explicit versions and clean (Radio Edit) versions are either censored or edited to a way that's unnatural.

Take P!nk's "Fucking Perfect" vs "Perfect"

The lyrics removes the burst of emotion in that part. That's the sacrifice you make for the radio edit.

Other explicit songs just does the bare minimum... Ariana Grande's "7 Rings" removes the vulgarities without replacing them.

Granted, I am unsure which method is better. The mind always fills in the gaps where the censored word should be, and when you're doing the sing along... you sing it anyways.

Personally I downloaded the clean version of the song and had been listening to it, without realizing that there was an explicit version. I thought well, that's a sad song.

Then YouTube Music served up the explicit version... I thought, damn, that's a desperately sad song.

The clean version alludes to at least knowing the feelings of the breakup, that they talked about it and decided it was best to go their separate ways.

The explicit version... is so one-sided. unrequited. raw.

Olivia recently appeared on Saturday Night Live singing Drivers License. And she did... well this...

For the second verse of the bridge she sang "I still... I still love you", this kept inline with the explicit version while still being TV friendly.

This was released late 2017. The couple officially confirmed to be dating that September.
It was said for the song to evoke the myth of Bonnie and Clyde. While they say hindsight is 20/20, looking back at it, they certainly got it spot on.

It included singles released all the way back from 2018, "Without Me" and subsequent releases like "Graveyard". Curiously however, "Nightmare", the single released in May of 2019 was not included.

Weird Al and his 8 days of coverage

Weird Al Yankovic has a new album out. Mandatory Fun.

To me, it wasn't how good his songs were that was interesting.
It was how he advertised for this album.

He said that he would reveal 1 new video in each day for each day. He certainly started out strong with Tacky, his parody of "Happy" by Pharrell. Then followed by "Word Crimes", and so on...

He could have just revealed everything on his website, or stuck with a particular website, or his Youtube channel, or VEVO like every other artist.

Instead... he did this:
1st video on Nerdist
2nd on VEVO
3rd on CollegeHumor
4th on Yahoo
5th on FunnyOrDie
6th on Popcrush
7th on his own YouTube channel
8th on The Wall Street Journal

The order of the website is interesting. Perhaps alluding to the amount of influence each site has on the release of his album (VEVO being a conglomerate of multiple record companies including Sony Music Entertainment, which label RCA is releasing this album), on him (He hosts a show on Nerdist), on the internet (CollegeHumor/Yahoo/Funny or Die) or on mainstream coverage (WSJ).

As the days went by, I was trying to guess both which song was going to be shown and the website on which it was to debut on.

The only one I don't understand is Popcrush. It's not a particularly big or important enough site for a Weird Al video to "exclusively" debut. As of writing this, it is still on the front page, albeit relegated to a link under "Latest News" [for something 3 days ago...].

Then again, by giving these websites exclusivity, he probably saved a lot of production / promotion fees for these videos. By grouping these videos together in a 8 day barrage, each website gets more views from different demographics and in turn, perhaps, encourage the person visiting to check out more of the site.

Out of his parodies in this album, there was one song that was left out. "Inactive", a parody of Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive was not made into a video. He did make the right choice though, I felt that it was the most uninspired song in the entire album. For parodies of the fluffy, he himself left a huge shadow with his 1988 song "Fat" [or even "Eat It" to that extent].

Playlist: Coldplay Essentials (Update)

Coldplay's new album Mylo Xyloto came out not long ago.

You guys can refer to my previous post for the playlist I constructed before M.X.

I'm limiting the number of songs to around my previous length, so some songs are culled, and some songs are added in.

The new list could be a reflection of the changes that spaced these two blog posts. It has been a while since they've released an album, and its been a while I've looked at the list.

Though the lyrics, they are still a marvel.

Sleeping Mix 可以睡着的歌

I've always had a on and off relationship with sleep.

Sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it like that philosophy article that you thought you understand but when the final rolls around you struggle to get it.

These days the problem isn't it, it's me. I'm having trouble finding time to sleep. I mean the daily routines of a internet savvy computer science graduate does take up copious amounts of time, and I'm caught between books, games, videos, programming and internet.

I remember periods in my university days where it was just things that was bothering me, making me unable to sleep. This is where these songs helped me.

I chose a mixture of english and chinese songs, well cause that's what I am, Bilingual. I tried to avoid drums lines or tracks with heavy bass, well, I found them to be the opposite of therapeutic. Tracks with piano lead-ins, and or mixed with acoustic guitar was what I was aiming for.

Maybe I find the female voice to be more soothing, but the mix contains only one and a half (group) male artist (though not one you would expect). Nevertheless, the vocals are what I would call.... drifty, angelic if you will.

I was flipping through my iPhone for random songs that fit my mood on a particular day. I stumbled onto one song that had been in my music library for the longest time, most likely 10 years ago.

I remember hearing it on MTV that one time and found it to be extremely good.
Be warned though, its a boy band, and yes, its a ballad.
Not a well known boy band outside of... well... France.

I'm going to spare the details of where this boy band ended up. The short story is that not long after the album "Excuse My French" which included this song was released in 2001, they disbanded.

Bummer, I thought they sang very well in English.
